What is osteopathy?Osteopathy is a type of manual therapy that focuses on the individual needs of each person. The goal is to improve wellness by removing restrictions within the body. By doing so, the body is then able to function better, which results in an overall healthier quality of life. The manual techniques used can have an affect on all bodily systems. These techniques are gentle and safe, and include working with soft tissue, the cranium, joint mobility, and organ function. Osteopathic treatment focuses on the individual as a whole, and aims to find the pathway of health by removing dysfunction.
-
How many osteopathic treatments will I need? The amount of treatments depends on each individual and what they are being treated for. Usually in the beginning of a treatment plan, appointments may be closer together, which can be weekly or bi-weekly. This timeline can extend longer as the condition improves. It is important to provide rest time between appointments so that the body has time to adapt to the osteopathic treatment.

What should I expect on my first appointment?A medical history form will be sent via email. If you do not have email then please arrive 15 minutes prior to your first appointment to fill out the medical history forms. We will then discuss a full health history including current health conditions, body systems, previous injuries and surgeries, stress factors, and your daily life habits. In combination, these are all factors that help give a greater understanding of your presenting complaint as we proceed into your assessment and treatment. Assessment will include an examination of tissue, joints, spine and organs. This will be done through observation of posture and movement, and also by palpation. It is recommended to bring in reports from x-rays, MRI’s, and ultrasounds, which can also be sent via email beforehand. Treatment plans vary for each individual. The goal is to help the body achieve normal function therefore it is different for each person and their presenting complaint. After assessment, a treatment plan is discussed. Appointment timelines can change with follow-up appointments as we continue to assess progress and make the appropriate adjustments. Techniques will be discussed and chosen based on the structures being treated and what might be better suited for the patient. Osteopathic techniques use gentle palpation and are safe and non-invasive.

Will I experience discomfort during and/or after treatment?During treatment, techniques will be discussed in order for the individual to understand why the technique is being used and what to expect. If at any point the individual feels or experiences any discomfort, then they are advised to communicate this response, as to determine whether it is a normal reaction to treatment. After treatment, individuals may experience some discomfort or stiffness but this is a normal reaction to treatment.
